Are you looking for a local authority job?
Do you have a local government job to fill?
Local government in England and Wales employs
2.3 million people. Areas which local government jobs cover include
education, leisure and social services. Thousands of different
job titles covered around 400 occupations in the service. There
are opportunities in planning, legal work, IT, environmental health,
surveying, accountancy and policy.
Education accounts for the highest percentage
of workers in local authority at 58%, including teachers and support
staff. In social services there are 14%. The structure of local
authority can vary. In some places there is an all purpose council
responsible for all local services and functions (e.g. London
Borough).
In others there is a two-tier system; in
this district and county councils share responsibility for services.
Jobs with local government are in the public sector, and the application
process can take longer than for a job in the private sector.
Jobs are updated weekly in the local job centre, and sometimes
in the library. Most authorities also have websites showing vacancies,
which may also be found in industry-specific publications. By
the nature of the industry local authority jobs can be found nationwide,
and cover a wide range of skills, as shown by the job categories
mentioned above.
