When it comes to jobs in London the Capital
offers the greatest choice and range of positions.
People come to London to find work as it
is the capital, it is cosmopolitan, has an exciting reputation
and there are plenty of jobs in London. But are London’s
streets paved with gold? London, like the UK, has undergone a
change in the past twenty years, shifting from industrial to post-industrial
or service economy.
The leading sectors are now finance and business
services, together with cultural and creative industries, such
as film, TV, publishing, design. The change in the make up of
London’s workforce has been marked, with a reduction of
jobs in manufacturing companies from 1.5 million to 250,000 in
40 years. Indeed most of this quarter of a million are actually
working in company head offices in London, rather than actually
making anything! London’s old docklands are now only docklands
in name, the areas being given over to offices, business centres
and luxury apartments. All this means that London’s workforce
is more middle class than in the past. However, there is still
a demand for unskilled and low paid service jobs in London, with
a growth in jobs in bars, restaurants, cleaning, security. Average
earnings for jobs in London are nearly 50% higher than in the
UK as a whole, but the top 10% earn six times as much as the bottom
10%.
