The term engineering is used a lot, but do
we really know what it means? The dictionary meaning suggests
it is the application of science to control and use power, especially
by the use of machines. These days a lot of roles are suffixed
with engineer, some not always adhering to the dictionary meaning,
but it usually evident what the term suggests. A lot of engineering
jobs are definitely related to science as they are found in the
oil, aerospace, construction, mechanical and pharmaceutical industries.
Less evident, but equally important, are
engineering jobs in IT, food & drink, and paper & print
industries. Qualifications for the former jobs in engineering
would understandably be a degree in engineering, but this is less
obvious with those latter roles. Jobs in engineering will often
not be desk jobs as there is demand for engineers in a “hard-hat”
environment, but just as importantly roles in engineering can
encompass technical drawing and forecasting results and behaviours
etc, much of which would be accomplished on a computer.
Licensed engineers have formal titles such
as Professional Engineer, Chartered Engineer and Incorporated
Engineer. Engineers apply technology, mathematics and experience
by use of their vision, reasoning and judgment to design and produce
useful and practical results.
